The Solar Cell Turns 60!
Sixty years ago today, Bell Laboratories revealed a world changing discovery — the first solar cell capable of converting sunlight into useful amounts of power. Bell shocked on-lookers by using solar energy to power a 21-inch Ferris wheel. The next day the New York Times declared that this marked “the beginning of a new era, eventually leading to the realization of one of mankind’s most cherished dreams – the harnessing of the almost limitless energy of the sun for the uses of civilization.” For more information, read the full article at CleanTechnica.
To think, not too long ago our entire industry was nothing more than science fiction fantasy. Do you think the scientists at Bell ever dreamed we’d be powering homes and businesses from solar energy? We feel we owe a lot to Bell Laboratories, and all of the other pioneers and innovators working in solar energy over the last 60 years. We’re also proud to be involved in what are still the early days of solar power.
At TerraSol, we’re passionate about preserving Earth’s natural resources while saving customers money and we’re always looking for new ways to do exactly that. With so much accomplished in a short 60 years, imagine how far we’ll have come in another 60!
Cheers to the solar cell!
