How Much Power Can I Generate?
A PV solar system consists of panels, inverters, racking and roof mounting equipment. How much power you can generate depends on your budget, how much available space you have on your roof or grounds that is free of shade, and how quickly you need to see a return on your investment. Today, federal and state tax credits are available to help offset the initial equipment costs.
What’s the largest system I can fit?
There are three factors that impact how many panels and what size system you can accommodate on your roof: home orientation, shading and roof structure.
- Orientation – South-facing roofs are ideal, but east or west-facing roofs still offer good potential space for panels.
- Shading – Solar panels can only be placed on areas of your roof and yard that are shade-free from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Roof structure – Large, smooth roof surfaces are ideal for solar panels. Roofs with large gables, dormers, chimneys or other structures that break up the surface into many small irregular spaces will limit your system size and possibly make a ground system preferable.
